Schofield Highlights
What a Fantastic final 9 Tap Tournament we had this past weekend at Schofield Bowling Center making Hawaii's 8th Annual YEC a Huge Success. Competing with work requirements, injuries, deployment, family commitments and medical emergencies, we had a great tournament with lots of fun and enjoyment. In spite of having 48 entries, the Tour was still able to pay 1st Place $1,124.00; 2nd place wasn't too shabby either as we paid out $562.00 and 3rd place received $340.00, in total the tour paid out $4,450.00. With 48 entries, the format had a little deviation as we had to make a change and delete one round.
"Lucky" Bobby
Bob Kailewa needed to get to the 10th frame clean to lock up and win his 4th title as Year End Champion (YEC) 2018.
Last year, Ricky Laguana had barely beat Ericka Ebia by 2 pins, Kenny Reynolds by 3 pins and the rest of the scores were close. This year the scores were close except for one individual standout. In round 1, Roy Takara led all qualifiers with a 1027 followed by John Hata, 34 pins out with a 993. Round 2 had Nicholas McDuffie leading by 22 pins, a 296 then Lloyd Fukuda at 274 and Roy Takara 271. Hence, the field was set for the run at the Year End Championship for 2018.
It was round 3 with the Top 10 qualifiers and the "Hottest" bowler of the day itching for a chance at his first Title, Roy Takara. Nicholas McDuffie, mister fun loving, moon walking, crowd pleasing fellow; Lloyd Fukuda, the quiet no nonsense guy; Paul Braga, just happy to be there bowling; John Hata, mister steady; Giles Okada, just "rippin it"; Adrian Kelley, just patient and kind; Brian Pineda, "da Hulk", if it don't strike, throw harder the next frame; Bob Kailewa, happy go lucky, nice guy (still neva buy us Pizza); Last but not least, Vergilio Repollo, bringing up the rear and just loves to bowl.
Nicholas came out hot with the front five strikes. Vergilio and Lloyd were staying close so that Nick wouldn't get too far ahead. Bob and John stayed within striking distance as did Giles and Paul. Brian was getting frustrated and Roy seem to be tiring, and Adrian looked confused. Nicholas, coming off of the fifth frame strikes, bowls his sixth frame and holy mac, pulls it, picks up one pin and things start to unravel for him. Nicholas could not right the ship and shoots 197 for 8th place. Paul and Giles were clean in the early going but a couple of hiccups in the later frames cost them dearly, Paul 208, Giles 205, finishing in fifth and sixth place. Adrian (194) and Roy(188) finished in 9th and 10th place. Brian came to the bowling center hurt and ailing from work and finally succumbed to his ailments placing in 7th position. John Hata's (221) spare and 7 count 10th frame left him one pin shy of Lloyd (222). John placed 4th and Lloyd at 3rd. Vergilio needing some help and strikes, just couldn't get that lucky one.
Bob "Lucky Guy" Kailewa was in command as he goes off the sheet from the 6th frame, shoots 257 + 24 for a 281 and the 2018 YEC Championship. What a great finish for Bob as he picks up his fourth title and YEC Jacket. Congratulations, Bob! Bob used a Storm Lock, drilled by Exxxtreme 300 Virgil Dela Cruz. He thanks his bowling "partner" Dwayne Corpuz and Virgil for drilling his ball; Fran, Kawika and the 9 Tap Tour Staff for putting on these tournaments. Congratulations Bob!

BOY (Bowler of the Year) 2018
The BOY (Bowler of the Year) ended with a runaway as Brandon Benictaout distanced himself from the rest of the field by winning 3 titles. Randy Kaea-Cook beat Kelly Magsanay by a point to take 2nd Place. Randy and Kelly were followed by Terrence Fukuda, who had a shot of slipping by Randy and Kelly, finished outside of the cash list and settled for 4th place. Neither Ryan Kumai or Richard Nagamatsu (tied in 5th Place) norVergilio Repollo (8th) and Grace Toguchi (9th) make the cash list to move up the BOY Award list. Kevin Asato cashed but could not get any higher than 7th Place. As it turned out the only movement was Craig Bolling replacing Glen Lim for the 10th spot by two pins. Craig cashed in 15th place to give him just enough pins to beat out Glen. Brandon Benicta was on cruise control as his 185 points were 89 points ahead of Randy and 90 over Kelly. Brandon claims the "Bowler of the Year" Title for 2018. Congratulations! Brandon. |
