Skyway Park Bowl - Renton, WA
February 28th, 2015
Total Paid Out: $10,039.00
Challenging conditions and lower scores seemed to be the theme on Saturday as the Tour returned to Skyway Park Bowl for our first visit of 2015. Some might argue that the aging pins could have been the main contributor to the lower scores as Skyway had hoped to debut new ones for the Tour this week but (unfortunately) the order hadn't shown up in time to be put in play for Saturday's tournament. As is usually the case, the conditions didn't take away from the incredible excitement and fierce competition, as with another nice turnout and 144 Entries, 29 Bowlersmade their way to the Cash List with the Cut-Line at 904.
It has been discussed and debated over the years whether new or old pins make a difference or give bowlers an edge when it comes to getting 9-Taps...You can argue either way, but Saturday the older pins may have had an edge as THREE bowlers had 'Money' shots at the 'Middle 7' and $500.00. In the First Squad there was Judy Buchanan, who had hit the Jackpot and $2,034.00 just 15 short months ago. Unfortunatley, this time Judy came up short, missing her mark slightly on the 7th shot. In the Final Squad, just about 5 minutes separated two shots at the 'Middle 7'. Divina Novelo was first and as most who know her, she is no stranger to having the 'knack' for getting 9-Taps. Cool, calm and collected best describes Divina as she converted her attempt (see her video below). Shortly after Divina converted, on the opposite end of the house, GomerBraganza was going for his own share of the Jackpot. Although he knew that he had hit his 6th straight tap and was going for 7, he was also putting the finishing touches on a monster series with a chance at winning the Tournament. You won't see it on the video, but the nerves were evident for Gomer as he actually stepped back off of the approach twice before his attempt at glory (see his video below).

As a result of these two successful 'Middle 7' attempts, both Divina and Gomer took advantage of the Jackpot Consolation & 'all ties paid-in-full'. They both pocket $500.00 and because the 9-Tap Jackpot took the $1000.00 hit, it drops only slightly to $6,837.00 for our next Tournament. The Progressive Pot remains Healthy as well and sits at$2,243.00 as the Tour takes a week off then heads to Narrows Plaza Bowl.
$500 Each for Divina & Gomer
Glen Brown struggled in his 1st Squad entry, but somehow was able to make a BIG adjustment for his Reentry into the Final Squad where he fired his way to 3rd Place with a 1014 series. Tough thing for Glen was that a 7-10 split on his final shot of the day likely cost him from tieing for 2nd. Glen did take Top Honors in the Scratch Game & Series Pots which, coupled with his 3rd Place Check, put him at $864.00 for the day. Nice shooting, Glen!
Thang Duc Thai was on a mission of his own on Saturday as he was trying for his 3rd Career Title since joining the Tour back in 2011. Thai fired his 2nd Tour 300 9-Tap game to finish the day in a Huge Way coming up just short of another Title with a 1016 set! For his 2nd Place Finish, Thai takes home a very nice $973.00 check! Well Done, Thang!
Now, back to the subject of Gomer Braganza...It wasn't enough for Gomer to nab $500.00 from the Jackpot, he also finshed 2nd for High Scratch Series for another $80.00 and Oh, by the way, he Won the Tournament with the Day's Top Score of 1036! What a day for Braganza as, by our count, that's a $2,762.00 Pay Day! Wow! This certainly makes up for the CRUSHING, ONE PIN LOSS he suffered back in November at Imperial Lanes. For the 2nd Straight week, our Champ nearly wasn't able to bowl as he had forgotten his bowling shoes at home and was going to opt out but decided at the last minute to make the trek home to get them. Gomer, who joined the Tour just last year, entered his final game of the day needing a BIG game. Not only did he succeed, but came up with a Personal Best 276 Scratch game along with the 1036 series which is also his Top Score to date. Gomer used his Brunswick 'Mastermind Solid' ball, drilled by Pat Johns at HiLine Lanes and said that he felt "nervous & lucky" in that 4th game and wanted to thank the HiLine Lanes staff for helping him with practice. Our Newest Champ also wanted to thank the Chris Andreula, Kai Pedro, Bronson Etse &Tim Apthorp for all of their encouragement & support. Gomer plans to save his winning check for a trip to his homeland, The Phillipines sometime this coming Fall. Congratulations, Gomer!
