Nob Hill Lanes - Yakima, WA
July 7th, 2012
Total Paid Out: $3,350.00
Yakima was downright HOT... both the weather and some of the bowlers! Just like our visit to Port Angeles in May, there was plenty of enthusiasm from both the locals and those of us who were visiting. Special THANKS to all of our Hosts, Jim & Don at Nob Hill Bowl, plus Tour regulars Mick, Denise, Judy, Ron & Chuck (Yakima locals) and Floor Directors Leon & Nelson (who together also ran the Bracket Table), for a VERY SMOOTH running Tournament. The scores were just slightly higher than normal and it was the Yakima locals who made the needed adjustments to the different conditions. 3 of the Top 4 finishers made BIG improvements on re-entries... the Top 2 both struggled in the first squad, only to come back with 300 pin improvementsin the 2nd Squad (nice adjustment), that resulted in only a THREE PIN margin of victory. 5 times Bowlers started games with 3-Taps, but no one managed the 4th, so they shared $125.00 in Jackpot Consolation money.
The Nob Hill Champion was first time Tour bowler Mel Burton Jr (no not related to PBA Bowler Nelson Burton Jr). Mel bowled with zero handicap and the day before the Tournament, he had commented to friends, that he was 'reluctant' to bowl, since hewasn't sure he'd have a chance against bowlers with lots of handicap. He proved what we often tell bowlers, when you have a fair 'Level Playing Field', it's the bowler who gets HOT that wins, regardless of skill level. Mel got HOT all right! After he finished his first entry with his best game of the set, but only a 759 series, he decided to try again. The improvement in his 2nd set was most Impressive, shooting a HUGE 1073 series and not only Winning the Tournament, but also taking 2 hdcp High Game Pots, plus the High Scratch Series and Game as well. Pretty nice day for a bowler who was unsure about entering. But, that's not where the story ends. His friend James Pitt had decided not to re-enter, until Mel finally convinced him to try again. That almost backfired when James came within 3 pins of winning the Tournament himself. Mel used his Hammer Jigsaw, drilled by Jim at the Nob Hill Pro Shop to win the Title. He plans on using his $886.00 in winnings, plus all his side pot money, to pay bills and enter more Tournaments. He said that he and his friends are looking forward to entering some of the Tour's Puget Sound events. CONGRATS Mel for Win #1.
In 2nd Place, was a former 9-Tap Tour bowler James Pitt. James used to bowl with the Tour in 2008 before being transferred to Yakima with the National Guard. His sweet 1070 would have been enough to Win at most Tour stops, but came just 3 Pins short this week. His previous best finish was an 8th Place at a 2008 Doubles Tournament at Tower Lanes. In 3rd Place, another Nob Hill bowler, Ken Weaver shot an excellent 1058, coming within just a few shots of the Top Spot. Followed by Chuck Gonsalez who also had his best finish, since he's joined the Tour in April, shooting a solid 1030.
