Wrap Up

A FANTASTIC Day at Paradise!  HUGE THANKS to all theVet's Pot Sponsors (above), whose enthusiastic support for our Veterans is appreciated by ALL.  We hope our bowlers will support our sponsors as well.  Paradise Bowl also made a last minute contribution to the Pot, which pushed it into a Record high, totaling $1,050.00.  1st Place in the Vet's Pot, was Len Denton who earned $315.00 for his 288 game (w/hdcp).  Len is a 20 year Army Retiree (Drill Sergeant), who served TWO Tours in Vietnam (64/65 & 70/71) and one in Germany.  A tie for 2nd with 285s, went to Frank Cochrun, a 20 year Marine  Retiree who spent 11 years in Okinawa and Rey Alvarez a 23 year Navy Retiree, each taking home $236.00.  4th Place paid$158.00 to Willie Downing and 5th went to Roy Akioka worth$105.00.

We also thank our bowlers for their patience and Don Mann(mechanic) for making an emergency fix to the oil machine before the 1st squad, when it short circuited causing a 40 minute delay.  The 'New' lanes at Paradise, formerly from Hooters Bowl, continued adding to their incredible history with some very nice scores and a HUGE BONANZA for Pearl Sedeno & Rey Alvarez (see videos).  Both earned a coveted chance to throw ONE-BALL for $1,000.00 and both converted the opportunity, although Rey had a near heart attack 'wiggle' out of the 3-pin he left standing.  That was the 3rd time this year that we've had Double Winners with 7 (middle) Taps in the same Tournament.  A nice crowd turned out in all three squads, pushing the total to 143 entries and a Cash List that paid 29 places.

Our Vet's Day Tournament Champion Tong Nguyen continued his streak of earning ONE late season Title per year, for the 5th straight year.  This makes 10 career Wins and is also the 2nd straight year that Tong has won the Veteran's Day Tournament, taking last years at Ft Lewis's Bowl Arena.  Although Tong wasn't eligible for the Vet's Pot, he has a special story that does relate to the military in Vietnam.  32 years ago, Tong was only 11 years old when he came to the U.S. with his older brother, after previously living in a Manila refugee camp.  He and his brother still live together in Seattle.  Tong joined a Junior League as a 15 year old when he first began bowling.  The 9-Tap Tour "Hall of Fame" member earned $1.957.00 for this Title, pushing his #1 Career Earnings to $42,552.00.  He again used his OLD Hammer 'Off-Set', that was drilled by Ed Dolfay at Skyway Park Bowl, for this Win.  Tong posted a nice 1057 in the 1st squad and several later bowlers really made him sweat, when it looked like they had him in their sights, but the score did manage to hold-up.  CONGRATS Tong, on another milestone!

Tong actually owes his win to a THUMB INSERT.  Rey Alvarez fell SIX PINS short of the Win, after an errant final game shot cost him 15 pins.  His ball's thumb insert was still stuck on his thumb and he was lucky just to get 5 pins on the shot, but also couldn't convert the spare.  Don't feel too bad for Rey... in addition to his $883.00 for 2nd Place, he got the $1,000.00 from the 9-Tap Jackpot and another $236.00 for 2nd in the Vet's Pot.  NICE DAY REY!!!  In another Spectacular PerformanceSaturday, Pen Hagen had a shot at the Top spot going into her last game in the 2nd squad, ending up with a great 1021, putting her in 2nd place at the time.  She decided she was bowling so well, she re-entered, wanting to try to win it!  She had another good shot, topping her score with a 1043, but falling to 3rd Place (thanks to Rey), earning $481.00.
