Hooters Bowl - Renton, WA March 5th/6th, 2011
Total Paid Out: $13,776.00

We had a weekend full of many firsts at every twist and turn! Obviously, the 212 Entries and 42 Finalists was a Record. A thrilling Championship Match that ended in a 222-222 TIE, leading to a one game roll-off, was also a first. The Progressive Pot, which was already breaking new ground this week... It now skyrockets to an unheard of $4,116.00. That should guarantee that we'll have our 1st $3,000.00+ Champion (modern Prog. Pot era) at Narrows Plaza, if the winner is fully in the Pot.
Another strange '1st' happened with the 9-Tap Jackpot, when FOURTEEN Members got the first THREE Taps and NO ONE managed to get the fourth. The $75 paid to each of the 14, produced a total Consolation payout of $1,050.00. Wes Puishis had 6 in-a-row in the middle of a game, but also missed on the magic seventh, as so many have done the last two months. Despite the huge numbers, we stayed on time both days thanks to Frank and Len at the Front desk and no major breakdowns thanks to the long hours Don (mechanic) put in while working the whole weekend in the back. Thanks also to Hooters, Miller-Lite & Hammer for Sponsoring this record weekend. The new HAMMER 'Taboo' and Top Qualifier jacket goes to Gani Ildefonso for his huge 1088 shot on Saturday. The Finals saw some great 'see-saw' battles and spectacular finishes. The tightest match of the day was a ONE-PIN (222-221) nail-biter, between Kenny Tameno and Paul Marcello, who were the only prior Champions left when we reached the Elite 8. The (2-game) Final Match came down to two Members who were both seeking their first Title.
Nelson Sand FINALLY broke through for his first victory, after 13 previous 'Top 10' finishes, over the last 3 years.....THREE times finishing in 3rd Place. This $2,082.00 purse pushes his Career Earnings past $6,000.00. That was quite a payday considering it was with $10 in the Progressive Pot. After struggling in his first entry, he still felt that he had a good shot and "Just had a feeling". He made it count with a nice 1004 on his re-entry, but after 8 games in qualifying and 6 more games in the Finals, he really didn't want to have to shoot that 15th game of the day in the Championship Match tie-breaker. In a phone conversation Monday morning, Nelson said he was a little sore and stiff. He got even hotter in the Finals with his high game in the third round of 287. The retired Boeing worker bowls with us in the Friday morning Senior Pot-Games at Pacific Lanes, plus he participates in 3 Leagues in 3 different houses (Bowlero, Skyway & Secoma). His ball of choice this week was his HAMMER 'Chalk', drilled by Dave Hanson at Pacific Lanes. Dave (a Tour Sponsor) has now drilled the winning balls for 4 of our last 5 Champs. Nelson plans on using his winnings for a trip to Las Vegas to bowl in the Senior High Roller Tournament. He also enjoys gardening and we have enjoyed some of the 'fruits of his labor' (vegetables actually). CONGRATS Nelson on win #1!!
Jeff DuRussel had quite a week of ups & downs. He and I shoot in the same league at Daffodil and he had a very frustrating night Wednesday, so Mike Kelly worked with him after league. It obviously made a difference, helping Jeff to almost make the incredible leap from the 42nd qualifying spot to 1st. Jeff joined the Tour in 2002, but after a long layoff from bowling, he's just returned to the game this season, and his Record 2nd place share of $1,306.00 makes a nice welcome back present. Our 3rd Place finishers Kenny Tameno and Paul Padilla are also long time Tour Veterans, both joining back in 2002. Kenny was the lone previous Champ (4 Titles) in the 'Final 4' and his $576.00 check pushed his Career Earnings past $13,000.00. Paul was the sentimental favorite of many in the crowd, losing his semi-final match in a well fought 245-233 battle with Nelson. Paul also said he was out-of-gas by his last game, taking home $488.00 for his efforts.
