The 'Wily' Veterans solved the puzzle at Secoma this week. If anyone had any doubts whether temperature and humidity changes affect the lane conditions, these scores proved the case. The exact same oil pattern that generated winning scores of 1048 & 1077 in our two previous visits, saw those decrease along with the temps outside, to just 996 this time. The scores stayed below normal for all three squads, with the cash line ending up at a modest 889. The end result was FANTASTIC, because bowlers of all skill levels, just needed to get 'Hot' to finish in the money. We had a very diverse Cash List, with an extra WIDE range of handicaps, from a +58, all the way to a -18 pins. The list was nearly perfectly balanced with EIGHT bowlers with 9 or fewer pins and SEVEN with 25 or more pins, with the remainder in between. Even the 9-Tap Jackpot got off lightly, with Steve Shine the only bowler to string 4 Taps for a $100 Consolation Bonus.
After an absence from the Winners Circle of nearly two years, Mitch Vernon returns with flair. Mitch is one of the original 2002 Tour Members, who for a long time had the most Titles on the Tour. Now he gets back into that hunt with his 8th Career Title and the $1,735.00 for this win pushes his Earnings, over the last 8 years, to $19,035.00. Those Career earnings don't even include what he's earned in the 'side-pots'. Mitch's greatest asset is his positive attitude! He's an excellent ambassador and role model for bowling, who bowls for the pure 'enjoyment of the competition. Like everyone on the Tour, when you get HOT, you WIN. In Mitch's case, when he gets hot, even his -18 pins handicap per game, doesn't stand in his way. When he reached his 4th game Saturday, he needed a BIG finish to pull out a win. So. he 'stepped-up' and ripped a 298 game to wrap up the Title. The 'Flair' was actually an experiment. Mitch drills his own balls, so for this Tournament, he decided to try something totally new. He re-drilled one of (wife) Diane's old balls, a 13 pound Tropical Storm, thinking he might get more Taps with a lighter ball. It didn't work for getting 9-Taps but, he said that surprisingly it carried strikes really well. According to Mitch, he 'lucked-out', by finding such a unique solution that worked so well at Secoma. He offered his thanks to the group he bowled with and his wife Diane. for their support. CONGRATULATIONS Mitch and welcome back to the Winners Circle!
Another original Tour Member, finished in 2nd Place, continuing his recent 'Hot Streak', Gary Woldt nearly pulled-off the very rare feat, of Back-to-Back wins. His 972 was good enough for a $794.00 payday this week. The absolute original (Member #1) Char Patton finished in 3rd Place for the 3rd time in 2010. This time, she takes home $427.00 boosting her Career Earnings to $15,814.00. Just missing a Top 3 finish with a 964, was Bernie Smith, making a successful return to the Tour after a long layoff.
9-TAP JACKPOT BONUS: We're going to increase the payouts for the Jackpot again! With the Jackpot nearing an unprecedented $8,000.00, the Holidays right around the corner, and only one 'Open' Tournament left in 2010, we're going to 'Sweeten-the-Pot'! For the upcoming Tournament at Bowlero Lanes, if an entered Member gets SEVEN No-Taps ANYWHERE in a game (other than the first seven), we will pay that bowler a $1,000.00 Consolation. If more than one person should pull-off this feat, we'll pay the $1,000.00 to each of them! Of course, the first seven will still win the Jackpot (80% of the Pot), but now you can even get a big payoff if it's the last seven, middle seven or whenever you string seven.
