It was great to be back to bowling after the Summer Break. The warm temperatures and humidity really played havoc with the lane conditions Saturday, keeping the scores well below average all day. We had lots of big games, but no one put together enough big games to run away with this one. The 966 winning score, was the lowest 4-game Top score so far this year. 11 bowlers made the Cash List with scores below 900 and a tie at 868 meant an extra (22nd) spot was added to the list. The lower scores not only gave everyone a clear shot at winning, but also produced another well balanced Cash List, with a nice mix of high, middle and lower average Members. Many bowlers were quite surprised to find themselves on the Cash List, thinking there was no way that their scores would hold-up. To reinforce the impact of the temperature, 7 of the Top 8 finishers came from the early squads, before it got warmer. David Kim and Kent Stockton shared the 9-Tap Jackpot Consolation with FOUR 9-Taps, each taking home $50. The Jackpot jumped to $5,478.00 for next week at Paradise Village.
Either Rollie Abella snuck into his 4th Career Championship, using an alias or his twin brother Rolly won his 1st Title. Actually, Rollie had dug out a 20 year old shirt from his bowling days in New Jersey, that had his name misspelled by the embroiderer. He still liked the shirt, so he kept it, but hadn't worn it in years. The shirt obviously had some good luck left in it! He also had just returned home from a California vacation and thought he was going to be too rusty to bowl very well. Rollie didn't think that his 966, shot in the 2nd squad, would hold up, so he re-entered to try to improve his score. Obviously, it was enough to carry him to a sweet $1,940.00 payday, but we didn't know whether to make the check out to Rollie or Rolly!? From the winnings he'll add a new ball to his arsenal, and he said the rest will go to his wife Maribel. His ball of choice this week, was much newer than the shirt, using a Storm 'Special Agent', drilled by Pat Johns at HiLine. Rollie is a well respected "Life Member" who joined the Tour in 2006 and he serves as one of the Liaison Committee leaders, who represents all of the Tour Members. He often bowls on the Tour with his Hooters Bowl league teammates, who are all Tour Members and most are also former Tour Champs. Saturday he was supported by teammates Mholee Divina and John Nissen, in addition to David Kim and Samson Ibale. This 4th Title will earn Rollie a rare Gold Champion shirt. CONGRATULATIONS Rollie!
In 2nd Place, CJ Jones started out slow, but finished strong with two big games to make it close, with a 950. He also had a run of 6 out of 7 No-Taps, but a real strike in the 2nd frame kept him from hitting the Jackpot for some BIG bucks. David Kim also made it close, with a big final game. His profitable day included a $468.00 payoff for 3rd, to go with the $220.00 he earned from the Scratch Pot and $50 from the 9-Tap Jackpot. |
