Lower scores Saturday, lead to some great wide-open competition. The Top 6 finishers were each in the hunt, with all six vying for their 1st Tour Titles and they were also the only six who cracked a 750 total for the 'Best 3 of 4' format. The dreary weather, coupled with our scaling back to three squads, led to smaller entry numbers this week. But, that didn't keep Tour veteran Rody Sumandig from coming within ONE PIN of taking down the 9-Tap Jackpot. Rody had his string of 5 No-Taps halted by an 8-count in the 6th frame and sure enough he came back with another 9 in the 7th. Although that 8-count cost him a HUGE sum of money, the $250 Consolation put a big smile on his face. That left the Pot to grow to a lofty New Record level of $7,466.00 for next week at Bowl Arena.
It was truly Eric Pham's Day in Paradise this weekend. Eric not only became a First-time Tour Champion, he also became a Life Member Saturday, sponsoring his 5th New Member. But it didn't end there. Eric was in such a groove all day that in the 2:30 squad, he shot what would have been a Top 10 score and in that 2:30 effort, he earned 2 of the 4 High Game Pots. Thinking he could improve on his results, he re-entered the last squad and took 2 more HG Pots and won an extra $150 from the Scratch Pot. He did indeed improve his score, by a healthy 99 pins, which was more than enough to capture the crown and a $1,697.00 payday. It wasn't easy... Eric needed a big final game to pull it out, which he accomplished with plenty to spare. His plans for the winnings include some new equipment and he's also scheduled some additional bowling lessons... So watch out! After two years and many nice efforts, which included a 2nd Place finish at Roxbury last year, Eric was excited to breakthrough with this win. His secret weapon was his Storm Dimension, drilled by Tour sponsor (SSPS) Dave Hanson at Pacific Lanes. Eric gets lots of practice at bowling on different conditions, by shooting leagues in three different Centers (Bowlero-Paradise-Pacific). He asked us to pass on his Thanks to Alfredo Oriza for "Pushing him mentally" during every game. He's earned many friends on the Tour with his always positive attitude, many of them were around to cheer him on and congratulate him on Saturday. CONGRATS Eric on win #1.
I thought that Gary Greene had it won with his 810, when I was told that Eric had an 803. But I wasn't aware that Eric had one more game to go to improve that score, which ended up pushing Gary to his second career 2nd Place finish. Gary still took home a nice $769.00 for being the only other bowler to shoot an 800 series. In 3rd Place, a newcomer from Eatonville, Larry Banford Jr shot on the same pair with Gary Greene. His 791 was not far back, worth $330.00, since he was limited to $10 in the Pro Pot. |
