The Doubles Tournaments are normally an administrative challenge, since so much has to be done manually and all of the multiple entries. This week, we actually had the smoothest running Doubles that we've ever had... Until the Tournament was over. The 'Freakiest' combination of ties at both 3rd Place & 5th Place and Top 3 Finishers that were not in the Winner's Pot, left us recalculating the Cash List and paying Winner's Pot money all the way down through SIX Doubles teams. We had SEVEN Members take advantage of the "Multi-Cash" feature of the Doubles, by cashing 2 times with different partners. David Kim and Tong Nguyen led the way, by each cashing 4 separate times. The obvious 'Trick' to the Doubles, is having both partners getting hot at the same time. There were some awesome scores that were shot at Narrows, that didn't make the Cash list. Steve Shine had both an exciting and frustrating day. He did Cash three times and had the Highest individual 2-game score of the day, but in his last game of the 3rd squad, he had the first 11 strikes and REALLY wanted his first No-Tap 300. An 8 count not only left him at 298, but also left him (at the time) ONE pin out of 1st Place and then to add insult to injury, after getting in the Dad's Day Pot in earlier squads, he didn't in the 3rd squad, which cost him $230. Another interesting irony for a Dad's Day Tournament, was a Mother & Son being in 1st place after the 3:00 squad. We've had a Father & Son win this event before, so it would have been a different twist, if Georgie & Louis Catiller's scores had held up. The $400.00 Dad's Day Pot was shared by Nepo Ortiz $230.00, Tong Nguyen $115.00 & John Nissen $55.00. The 9-Tap Jackpot got off pretty easy, with only Cecil Abay-Abay & David Kim sharing the consolation money with 3 No Taps. That allowed the Pot to shoot-up to $5,192.00 for the next Tournament at Roxbury.
Tour Veterans Jon Schneider & John Nissen teamed-up to take the Doubles Title at Narrows Plaza. Schneider winning for the first time in over a year, captured his 4th overall Title. Nissen jumps into lead in the 2010 Bowler of the Year standings with his 7th Career Title. The Jo(h)n's, both Life Members, were one of only 2 doubles teams to combine to shoot over 1000, finishing with a strong 1040. Both teammates shot very well, with John using his best score of the day, a 524, to match-up with Jon's only entry of the day, a 518. Nissen used his big scores to win an extra $130 from the Scratch Pot and Dad's Pot and he also Cashed with TWO partners. Schneider just barely missed in both of those Side Pots, but he did cash with THREE different partners. After some really ugly shots Saturday, Jon's quote of the day, "I've won with skill and I've won with luck, my scores today were PURE LUCK." Afterward, Jon's knee was bothering him so much, he could hardly walk on it. Pat Johns was the real hero this week, he drilled the balls for both bowlers, at the HiLine Pro Shop. Jon used a Columbia TEC Messenger and John used a Storm Virtual Energy. John asked us to thank David Kim, Mike Kravitz and Nelson Sand for their coaching and for their support.
in 2nd, Dorrie Quirante & Rey Alvarez had the other 1000+ score with a very nice 1023. Rey was making his first Tour appearance since knee surgery (they obviously did a nice job). His 535 was the 3rd Highest individual score of the day. Dorrie shot very well herself, with another one of the better scores of the day, a nice 488. They shared $681.00 for their efforts. In one of the notorious ties, David Kim/Mike Kravitz and Steve Shine/Tong Nguyen, shared the somewhat diluted 3rd Place prize money and Winner's Pot. None of those 4 mentioned any knee issues, which might be what held them back.
ENJOY THE 2-WEEK SUMMER BREAK! See you July 10th at Roxbury.
