WOW!!! GREAT turnout at Bowlero Saturday! Our last Tournament (Skyway) set a 2009 high of 139, but that was a 2-Day Tournament. The 130 for One-Day at Bowlero nearly matched Skyway and easily beats the previous 2009 one-day high of 121 at Narrows Plaza. Surprisingly, nobody got any big strings of 9-Taps going all day, so 4 members shared the Consolation with a lowly 3 No-Taps. Figures... We just increased the Consolation Bonus, so we'd pay out more money. The smaller payout helped give a BIG boost to the Jackpot, now climbing to $4,575.00. The PROGRESSIVE POT also grows from VERY BIG to a HUGE $2,567.00, for next weeks "Best 3 of 4" at Sun Villa Bowl in Bellevue. (directions in Wednesday's email)
At the Top of the Cash List we not only had a "Battle of the Ages", it was also a "Battle of EXTREMES"! In the 2nd Squad, 72 year-old Janae O'Nail, set the bar high, with a huge 1125. The 2nd place score was only 993 at that point. The 1125 looked unbeatable, but "Anything's Possible" on the Tour. In the 3rd squad, in steps a 16 year-old High-School student, Corben Etteldorf who rips off an incredible 1130. Another of the extremes, had Janae with 55 pins of handicap and Corben with only 2 pins. Guess it's true... ANY level of bowler CAN win at ANY time! We were ALL prepared for ANYTHING to happen in the 4th Squad and it nearly did. Terrence Alford had three BIG games but one soft stretch left him short, settling for 3rd Place, with a very nice 1082.
The CHAMPIONSHIP is Corben's FIRST Tour Title. He joined the Tour last January on a "Waiver", right out of the Junior ranks where he had been on the South Sound All-Star team. As Corben's bowling has improved, he has sought out tougher competition, such as the PBA Experience League he joined at Paradise. That challenge is what motivated him this year, to move up to adult Leagues and Tournaments. Corben had some BIG games in his first 5 months on the Tour, but only one Cash prior to his 2nd Place finish at Tower Lanes in May. At Tower, we thought he had his first win in the bag, until Paul Marcello nosed him out late in the day. This week, he reversed the roles and he was the one doing the 'Nosing Out', in a close finish that came down to Striking-Out in the 10th frame to pull out the close 5 pin win. Corben's ball was a Columbia "White Dot" drilled for him by Keith Boyd at Paradise. Corben also credits Keith's coaching for his continued improvement. He's plans on using his $2,147.00 in winnings to pay for a trip to Las Vegas to bowl in his first High Roller Tournament. He asked us to thanks his friend Demetrius for being there to cheer him on, his Mom (LaRae) for being his biggest supporter and his Dad (Bob) for always reminding him to "Never Give Up"!
