TOURNAMENT STORY |
Several times each year we have a member get into a "Zone" that there's just no explaining. When you get into that Groove or Zone, you just don't seem to be able to miss. But... you never know when it's going to happen. Our Tower Champion Kenny Tameno REALLY found that zone Saturday. Kenny has actually struggled on the Tour for most of 2008. With his job (Boeing) just going on strike Friday, he wasn't motivated to bowl Saturday. He didn't even have his 9-Tap shirt with him, but he paid his shirt fine and took a shot anyway. He didn't shoot very well in the 4:30 squad, so he packed up his balls to leave. Jessica Wy and Paul Marcello talked him into staying to re-enter the last squad and Jess offered to put up his entry fee. NOTHING hinted of what was about to happen. The scores all afternoon had been pretty normal for a "Best 3 of 4" Tournament. A handful of low 800's were leading the way, and overall, the scores were just a little on the low side. Then Kenny suddenly breaks out of his slump and throws (scratch) 300, 269, 300 for his first 3 games and he already has a record 911 score, for this format. A distant 78 pins behind, in 2nd place, was a more realistic 833. He was more surprised than anyone! Except of course Jessica... Kenny split the $2,632.00 winners share with her. When asked what he'd do with his share of the winnings, Kenny said that it would serve as his "Strike Fund". This is his 2nd Championship since he joined the Tour in June 2002. He used his HAMMER "Black Widow", drilled by Cory Gardner at Secoma, to win this one. FANTASTIC performance and CONGRATULATIONS Kenny!
J.R. King sat in 1st place most of the afternoon and looked like he was going to win it with a fine 833. The HUGE 2nd place money of $1,153.00 helped soothe the disappointment a little. Paul Marcello, who helped talk Kenny into staying, got bumped down to 3rd place (by Kenny). His 829 was still good for a NICE $576.00. Kawika (David) Kaea took the Jackpot Consolation with 4 No-Taps, good for $100, to go along with his 11th place finish.
Thanks to Tower Lanes this weekend and we look forward to seeing all the changes when we return in October! |
